Ferndale School Board Expected to Adopt Policy Officially Authorizing Oversight Committee

Ferndale Voters overwhelmingly supported a Ferndale School Bond in February with 62.04% of voters saying “yes.” That Bond included $112 Million for a new Ferndale High School, renovation of the Performing Arts Center, Critical Maintenance Projects and Safety and Security projects throughout the District. The Ferndale School Board welcomed inclusion of the Citizen Bond Oversight Committee as part of the Bond proposal. That Committee will serve as in an advisory capacity to the Ferndale School Board to ensure that projects are “on-time, on-budget and as-promised.”

At a regular meeting of the Ferndale School Board on Tuesday, March 26th, the Board expects to adopt a policy that will officially bring the Bond Oversight Committee to life.

The policy, labeled GC-5, does the following:

  • Authorizes the Oversight Committee
  • States the Committee Purpose and Authority
  • Sets Committee Operating Guidelines
  • Defines Conflicts of Interest
  • Outlines various District supports
  • Sets Duration of the Committee
  • Schedules Opportunity to Review at future date

The School Board is expected to review and approve the policy. The Board also expects to continue to work with the Oversight Committee as Committee bylaws are developed.

School Board President Dr. Kevin Erickson said, “The District looks forward to and welcomes this group – they have an important role to play in the success of our Bond projects and we are grateful. The meeting tonight gives us an opportunity to make the Committee official. The next few years will be a true partnership and, as with all great partnerships, we will continue to work together to make sure that we get all details worked out at the beginning of the process.”

Bond Oversight Committee Co-Chair Anya Milton adds, “We appreciate the community's support and will welcome all participatory contributions when the Oversight Committee begins our open public meetings. The Committee will continue working with the Ferndale School Board as we move forward with our bylaws and decide what support we need in order to fulfill our mission. Our plan is to provide updates on that process as we get ourselves organized and ready to do the work we were authorized to do.”

Once the Committee is officially authorized, Committee meetings and communication will be publically available.
