Attendance is One of Our ABCs of School Improvement

Every day of school missed is a day of learning lost.

  • Chronic absenteeism starts early with 9 percent of the state’s kindergartners —over 3,500 children—missing too much school.
  • Studies show that missing just 10 percent or more of school (chronic absenteeism) – whether absences are excused, unexcused or due to suspension – predicts lower levels of numeracy and literacy for students by third grade, class failure in middle school and higher levels of suspension.
  • Missing school can lead to a higher likelihood that students will drop out of high school and will have lower levels of persistence in college. Every absence, excused or unexcused, is a learning opportunity lost and can have significant impacts on a student’s success in school and life.
