Paraeducator Certification Program
The Fundamental Course of Study is Professional Development for All Paraeducators.

- The Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) is part of a larger professional development program which began in 2019.
- There are 12 courses (listed below)
- FCS courses will be taken online in Canvas. (7 hours must be in person)
- Hours outside of your work day can be turned in for paid extra time. Pay sheets can be submitted to your building administrative assistant.
Fundamental Course of Study (FCS)
The program begins with the FCS. The FCS is 28 hours of training that covers the paraeducator standards of practice. School districts are responsible for providing this training when funded.
Every paraeducator must complete the Fundamental Course of Study in the first two years.

Paraeducator Standards of Practice
The standards of practice make up the foundation of the certificate program.
The five standards are:
- Supporting instructional opportunities;
- Demonstrating professionalism and ethical practices;
- Supporting a positive and safe learning environment;
- Communicating effectively and participating in the team process; and
- Demonstrating cultural competency.
FCS Plan
- First year paraeducators must complete 28 hours prior to September 30 (if hired on or before September 1).
- If hired after September 30, you will have 6 months to complete all 28 hours.
- At least 7 hours of the FCS must be in person.

GENERAL PARAEDUCATOR CERTIFICATE
The general certificate includes 70 clock hours of training to help improve instructional practices. A paraeducator has three years to complete this certificate after completing the FCS. School districts are responsible for providing this training when funded.
Once the FCS is complete, paraeducators work on the General Paraeducator Certificate. This year, paraeducators are expected to complete 14 hours.
